You are not Alone Series

Graphic Design Thesis

Handcraft, photography

Due to the pandemic era, we are forced to keep social distance and spend more time with ourselves. Loneliness becomes more widespread than ever. Expand from this theme, I did a broad variations of works, including handcraft artifacts, graphics, typeface, and photography.

Starting from the sheer isolation, I made two separated spaces, with a “window” connecting these two cubes. As for lonely people, they are trapped in their own little space, and do not want to open this window, in a metaphorical sense. They feel like they are disconnected with the lively outside world. The contrast between the color and black and white, the abundance of material and simple strings emphasize “two different worlds”.

Based on the interviews I conducted from my friends, I create a series of graphics that represent the moments of loneliness.

This paper cut object enables me to play around with different word combinations by “opening different windows”. The act of flipping the paper is like opening the window. Since living alone can be a contributor to loneliness, I use the apartment as a symbol.

Medium:

Branches

Leaves

Hemp cord

By collecting the available materials from outside, the branches, and the leaves, this sculpture is made out of nature. It maintains the cage form as the self-reflective one, but the organic and irregular shape of the branches add the dynamics and flexibility of this piece and made this one completely distinctive from the other. The upward of the branches somehow creates a sense of fire and barbaric growth.

| Cage - Self Reflective |

Medium:

Rod, mirror paper, diamond paper, strings, rainbow film, and wood stick

Keeping a simplified traditional cage structure, the artistic object conveys a lonely person’s inward world. The flow and irregular shapes, either reflective or colorful, symbolizes the abundant thoughts, and the black strings symbolize something annoying and interfering. Placing it over the head further enhances the concept of the rich inner world happened inwside our mind.

| Cage - Technology |

Medium:

Rod, mirror paper, strings, rainbow film, Christmas light, projection, silver paper, and silver paint

I incorporate projection as part of the piece. Everything projecting from the projection is not a real thing; instead, it is the representation of the real thing: a photography, a video, and etc. The main concept here is similar to technology, and we are interacting with the representations. Lack of authenticity becomes one of the main contributors to loneliness.

In my barren land, you are the last rose.

Pablo Neruda,

Chilean poet

As if I have been surrounded and suppressed by the crowd. Under the colored photography. Everything is super saturated.

Projection

Black and white photography. The model and the cage have the color. The contrast between colors and monotone seems like I am in a historical museum, and contemplate the past.
